sketchbook II: strange airlines

I stepped on a lot of planes and trains last year, hence the name. the materials for this sketchbook (tearbook, actually) don't come from buying, but more of from gathering in an extended period. stepping on many different airlines help me realize what I love most about vietnam airlines: being able to speak vietnamese and listen to vietnamese, and also our killer and fire fashion and heritage magazines. the editorial team really put their heart and soul to it, through breathtaking photography and commentary. it is the sort of stuff that gives you ideas for the next travel destinations and also the cultural context for the country that you are visiting (they include lots of fairy tales and folk stories).

every page is collated with random stuff that I have during my college adulting journey. another feature is a lot of mail packages that I have received from all over the world. I've had la poste from france, and royal mail from the uk, postes canada from canada. it is great fun to look at it during my hibernating period. like fermentation, I think it will be even better 10 years looking back. happy reading!

why all the campus guides? you may ask. the others don't really matter, but the one above was the original one that I used to navigate and take photos for my castle on the hill blog. it was really torn and already coming apart, so I let it retire here.

wondering why the circle above is a bit green? it was the filter paper from one of my chem labs to make the green potassium salt.

and this one is from the chem lab where we made our cyanotypes. the print was really blurry so I used a marker to write on top of it. the blue color comes from prussian blue (produced by oxidation of ferrous ferrocyanide salts), not any sort of watercolor or paint.

he had my name wrong but nevermind.

layover in korea due to medical emergency. I wish ever airport was incheon airport.

from ouiouiland. france eats 30 million baguettes a day (1/2 per capita), or 10 billion a year.

my sister wanted to throw her failed watercolor painting away but I insisted her to give it a try. the clouds look like floating baguettes.

americans carry history in their pocket. the oldest penny I had dated back to the 1970s.

I recently got a bit into the cremation process. I love seeing open fire, like bonfire that you see while roasting marshmallows. I love seeing them reducing everything into ash. I mean zoroastrians have a point. the cremation process is to honor life, and in doing that to a day to honor time. I physicalized it by burning a page of a day calendar. it was engaging and scary at the same time. fire only works when you know how to control it.

welcome to sadness
the temperature is unbearable until you face it
thank you for flying with strange airlines
I will be your tour guide today
your emotional baggage can be picked up at carousel number 2
please be careful so that it doesn't fall onto someone you love
when we've reached your final destination
I will leave you to it
you'll be fine
I'm just gonna show you in
and you can stay as long as you need
to get familiar with the feeling
and then when you're ready, I'll be outside
and we can go look at the sunrise
by euphoria mixed with existential vertigo?
cool
